COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
EMBEDDING COMPOUND, LABORATORY
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement to Military Specification MIL-E-37007A which is cancelled.
This Commercial Item Description covers one type of embedding compound for use in histological laboratories.
Salient characteristics:
Shall be an embedding compound for supporting tissue specimens in histological procedures.
Shall consist of a molecularly balanced mixture of highly purified paraffin and plastic polymers.
Shall be suitable to support tissue specimens intended to be sectioned by slicing or cutting with a microtome, razor or sharp knife. The embedding compound shall set clear (i.e. without internal cracking as evidenced by lines running through the solidified wax or excessive external crazing). The embedding compound shall also set without granulation, and shall section easily when embedded with difficult tissues such as bone and cartilage.
Shall consist of varied shaped pellets or flakes. Pellets, if supplied, may vary in diameter from 1/8 to 1-9/16 inches, and in thickness from 1/64 to 3/8 inches. Flakes, if supplied, may vary in length and width from 1/32 to 1-9/16 inches, and in thickness from 1/64 to 3/8 inches.
Shall have paraffin and plastic polymers mixed in proper proportion to provide a melting point not less than 54 degrees Centigrade (C) and not more than 57 degrees C, based on testing procedures in accordance with ASTM D-87 (Melting Point of Petroleum Wax).
