SLIDE MICROSCOPE (Plain, Frosted End)

This commercial item description covers a precleaned, straight edge, frosted end 75 X 25 millimeter (mm) microscope slide that is 1 mm thick, for use in laboratory procedures involving blood smear work or the mounting of histological and cytological preparations.

Salient characteristics: 

Shall be a 1 mm thick 75 X 25 mm glass microscope slide with a frosted end (i.e. with marking sector), for use in laboratory procedures.

Shall have dimensions of 75 mm length X 25 mm width, with a ± 0.8 mm tolerance for each dimension. The allowable thickness range shall be 0.8 to 1.1 mm.

Shall be fabricated from clear transparent glass, free from imbedded foreign material, bubbles, seeds, blisters, striae and internal cloudiness.

Shall be supplied precleaned, free of residue, and ready for use. The faces of the microscope slide shall be such that, after being dipped into a beaker of distilled water, both surfaces immediately after removal from the water exhibit a uniform dispersion of liquid and absence of smears.

Shall have all four edges flat and perpendicular to the microscope slide faces without any beveling. The edges of the short dimension shall be free of chips, and shall be finished to ensure smoothness and uniformity for use I blood smear work. The edges of the long dimension shall be straight and shall be free of roughness or sharpness to facilitate handling. The corner of the microscope slide shall be square.

Shall be supplied with a single or double sided frosted end to give 17 mm to 21 mm marking sector(s) that allow legible markings to be applied with a No. 2 lead pencil. The frosting shall be sufficient to hold the No.2 lead pencil markings through normal rubbing, cytology fixatives (water and alcohol based), and submersion in alcohol and xylene.
