COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SHAKING MACHINE, LABORATORY,
(Blood Collecting Tube)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military Specification MIL-S-37453.
This commercial item description covers a mechanical shaking machine, suitable for use in thoroughly mixing, by rotation, blood samples contained in blood collecting tubes, in medical laboratories.
Salient characteristics:
The shaking machine shall consist of a housing which contains the motor, a rotating wheel, and a drive shaft to connect the motor to the wheel.
The motor housing sides and top shall be fabricated of a suitable sheet metal with openings to provide adequate ventilation for the motor during operation. The sides shall be secured to the top and base to form a stable structure for the shaker with at least one side and the top removable to allow access to the motor for servicing. The front may be straight for a vertically mounted wheel, pr slanted inward to provide for an angular mounting of the wheel. The base shall provide a rigid mounting surface for the motor, and shall have rubber feet secured to each of the four external corners to afford minimum vibration and prevent creepage during operation.
The wheel shall be fabricated of a suitable sheet metal or plastic, and shall be mounted on the motor drive shaft at the front of the motor housing. The wheel shall be designed to securely hold 12 evenly spaced, blood collecting tubes with a diameter range to 12 to 16 mm, and lengths that include 125 mm.
The wheel shall be turned at a speed between 15 and 24 revolutions per minute by a fractional horsepower electric motor which requires no lubrication. The motor shall operate on 115 volts, 60 Hz, AC and shall be controlled by an “on-off” toggle switch on the motor housing. The attached power cord shall be three conductor with a three prong male plug conforming to ANSI C73.11. One conductor and one prong shall provide a ground connection. The external power cord shall be not less than 5.75 feet in length.
The shaking machine shall be supplied with complete instructions for use and maintenance, and shall be UL approved.
Finish. The shaking machine shall be fabricated of corrosion-resistant materials or shall be protected by appropriate plating or painting applied in accordance with standard commercial methods and practices.
Identification marking. A nameplate shall be permanently attached to the shaking machine legibly marked with the electrical characteristics and name or registered trademark of the manufacturer.
