DISH, CULTURE, PETRI,
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military Specification MIL-D-36425B.
This commercial item description covers a sterile, plastic, disposable Petri culture dish, with a tight lid, for use as a container for a filter disk used in membrane filtering technique for bacteriological analysis of water under field conditions.
Salient characteristics:
The Petri dish shall be complete, top and bottom, sterile and disposable. The Petri dish shall be a suitable container for a Disk, Filtering, Micro-porous, (NSN 6640-00-299-8692), used with Water Testing kit, Bacteriological, (NSN 6665-000-682-4765), for bacteriological analysis of water in the field.
The Petri dish shall be fabricated of optically clear, scratch-free, polystyrene, free of toxic lubricants and other additives which would adversely affect the growth of bacterial cultures.
The Petri dish shall consist of a top section (cover) and a bottom section. The top section shall consist of a flat, circular top merging into a continuous wall, slightly tapered to fit telescopically with the upstanding wall of the bottom section, forming a tight seal by means of a wedge fit. The bottom section shall have a flat, circular bottom and upstanding continuous wall, slightly thicker lower part, tapering upward to fit the top section of the dish. An annular shoulder shall be formed on the lower part of the bottom section to provide a secure closure of the Petri dish. The bottom section shall be constructed so that it sits flat on a plane and level surface, and provides for a uniform media depth.
The bottom section shall be provided with 3 or 4 radial lugs, slits or depressions to aid in opening the closed dish.
The closed dimensions shall be 2-3/32 ± 1/6 inches in diameter and 0.035 to 0.050 inches in height.
The inside of the Petri dish shall be sterile. The method and efficacy of sterilization shall be acceptable to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Workmanship. The Petri dish shall be free from defects which detract from their appearance or impair their serviceability.
