COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
TUBE, CAPILLARY, MICRO-HEMATOCRIT
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military Specification MIL-T-36487B dated 12 June 1978 and Federal Specification NNN-T-1499A dated 15 April 1978.
This Commercial Item Description covers requirements for plain and heparin-coated capillary tubes for use in micro-hematocrit procedures.
Salient characteristics:
Capillary tubes by this specification shall be of the following types, as specified for the appropriate stock number and item identification:
Type I – Heparinized
Type II – Plain
Capillary tubes of both types shall be clean, transparent and fabricated of soda-lime or borosilicate glass, suitable for the purpose intended. The length of the tube shall be 75 ± 2.0 mm. Wall thickness shall be 0.20 ± 0.03 mm. inside diameter shall be from 1.1 – 1.2 mm. bore of the tube shall be uniform and not vary in excess of ± 0.025 mm in 75 mm.
Capillary tubes shall be straight and open at both ends without lip or obstruction. Tube shall be cut at 90 degrees to tube axis and shall not have sharp, chipped or jagged ends. Tube shall be capable of drawing up blood to a level within 2 cm. from the top end.
Type I. Inner surface of Type I shall be uniformly coated with minimum of 3.0 U.S.P. units of Heparin. Heparin shall be the ammonium salt isolated from pork lung, liver, intestinal mucosa, or beef lung or liver. For the purpose of identification, each tube of Type I shall be color coded with red tip or band.
