WATER BATH, ELECTRIC (Microtome
Tissue Specimen Section Mounting)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This Commercial Item Description covers a tissue float bath for softening embedded tissue specimens.
Salient Characteristics:
Shall be a constant temperature water bath with a variable temperature setting, suitable for use as a tissue float bath for softening embedded tissue specimens before being affixed to microscope slides.
Shall be suitable for use on 120 volt, 50/60 Hz, AC supply lines.
Shall have a double-walled round-basin type of construction, with a nominal 2 inch wide ledge between the exterior and interior walls. The ledge shall provide a warming area for the slides, and shall slant inward toward the working chamber to eliminate drippage on the work bench. Suitable insulation shall be included between the outer housing and working chamber to conserve heat and permit handling when the working chamber is in a heated condition. The exterior surface shall be cool to a user’s touch when the working chamber is in a heated condition.
The working chamber shall have nominal dimensions (inches) of 8-1/2 diameter by 2-1/2 deep, and shall have at least a 2.3 liter capacity.
The bath temperature shall be controlled by an adjustable infinite heat controller with reference dial markings. The dial adjustments shall permit operation from slightly above ambient to 70 degrees Centigrade (C) with a uniformity of plus or minus 1 degree (C) for a preset temperature. The bath temperature shall be monitored by a partial-immersion glass thermometer (to be supplied with the water bath) which shall be inserted in the water bath and held in place by a suitable thermometer holder. The thermometer shall be easily removable from the thermometer holder.
