COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
MICROTOME, Rotary, Automatic
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description in preference to Military Specification MIL-M-36314B which is cancelled.
This Commercial Item Description covers one type of automatic feed rotary microtome suitable for serial sectioning of specimens.
Salient characteristics:
Shall be a bench mounted hand wheel operated, automatic specimen feed, rotary type microtome designed for serial sectioning of paraffin embedded tissues.
Shall as a minimum consist of a base, handwheel, object clamp, course advance handwheel, knife holder and cover. The micrometer system should be maintenance free. The horizontal feed system shall be independent of the vertical movement of the specimen and shall consist of an enclosed micrometer spindle feed assembly. The thickness adjustment shall be from 1 to 50 microns. The housing shall be protected with a front cover to prevent paraffin debris from entering the mechanism.
Shall be supplied with the following configurations:
A jaw clamp/knife holder
A quick release cassette clamp/disposable blade holder
Shall include a micron thickness indicator on the front of the housing to indicate the selected thickness of the specimen being sectioned. A dial or knob controlled thickness indicating scale shall be permanently marked with the following specimen thickness increments for the indicated thickness ranges:
